A warm welcome to three new cooks who are joining our email circle! Cathy Berlot recently joined our Thursday Night Sangha here in Portland:Thanks so much for giving me the info for your mindful cooking group. One of the things that attracted me to Buddhism in general and Thich Nhat Hanh in particular was the animal-friendly nature of the teachings. Best wishes, Cathy
Alice Ruth, in New York City, found us online: I am a follower of Thich Nhat Hanh, and was watching some Plum Village and Blue Cliff videos, and then I looked up a Thay quote about trees. One thing led to another, and I found your page. ..... I was surprised, because, as a vegan who loves to cook, I had not heard of, or seen, this page. The recipes look delicious, and I can't wait to try to some of them. I will let you know how that goes, and I will share some recipes in the future, too, I hope. Warmly, Alice
Marion Achoulias is adding a new Canadian province to our map --- she lives in Montreal in the province of Quebec, Canada. She says:
Dear Eve and friends,
thank you for this wonderful website. I am looking to find authentic Plum
Village recipes to share with my Sangha. Is there even an official cookbook I
could buy? If no, is anyone working on this very important project? I would
certainly help as much as I could with promotion online and local (Eastern
Canada). Thank you so very much, Marion Achoulias
In a second email, she added:
there seems to have been a vegan cookbook, written by monks and nuns ( published by Plum village Press), but it must be out of print. It would be nice if there was an online version ..... Perhaps I could prepare a binder with collected recipes (i.e. print several of your delicious recipes) I will certainly indicate where they come from so people can join your circle, too. Have you been thinking of creating a print version? ---Marion
Does anyone have an answer to her question --- is there a Plum Village Cookbook? Would anyone like to track this down? As far as a print version of our recipes, I know some people print the recipes they like and keep them in a looseleaf binder. In my kitchen, it helps to have a smaller notebook so I use a template to print the recipes at half size (8 &1/2 by 5 & 1/2 inches). I can share the template with anyone who is interested.
If a source of Plum Village recipes is found, I expect we could make a place for them on our website. We already have a recipe or two in the collection. If we had lots more, they could become a new category.
In my last email, I introduced Jannette Diep in Houston, Texas, who is program coordinator for Boat People SOS-Houston. I asked her how she found us and got this enthusiastic reply:
Thank you for your email. I am grateful that I found such a wonderful website on healthy recipes! I was doing a search for a vegetarian pumpkin recipe for our farmers market event and somehow your website came up, as a Buddhist, I love vegetarian food, so you can imagine how I felt! Like I hit a goldmine of delicious recipes! Our nonprofit organization provides a host of social direct services to the immigrant and refugee community, the work is so rewarding! As I mentioned earlier about the recipes, I have developed a community garden project for the youths and seniors in the community, and healthy eating is a part of that program. I hope to share some of the great recipes on your website to them. And if we create some vegetarian recipes, we will definitely share it with you. Regards, Jannette
Our virtual dinner table is such a wonderful meeting ground. I feel lucky to be in the middle, getting to know so many of you and introducing you to each other. Do keep sending your thoughts, questions and recipes!
I have a new recipe for you this time, the colorful Quinoa Salad with Edamame and Mango that Linda created for our Summer Potluck:
