New year, new ideas

I hope your holiday celebrations were nourishing in every way. Our first recipe of the new year comes from Marge in California. She made herbed tofu for the holidays, but I don't think you need to wait for the next holiday season to enjoy this special dish:

I'm snowed in at home just now, which means perfect conditions for reading. Joaquin in Connecticut told me about a book called Proteinaholic by Garth Davis, a physician who specializes in weight loss and bariatric surgery --- who is a self-described recovering "proteinaholic". I've only done a quick skim so far but it looks like a very interesting effort to get to the bottom of our culture's excessive concern with protein. I was amused to learn that putting the word "protein" on anything (granola bars, beverages, soups, salads, etc.) gives the product a "health halo effect" --- even though excess protein causes all kinds of health problems. Here is the website:

While the word "protein" creates that health halo, the word "healthy" is actually a negative label for most shoppers. George in Pennsylvania sent this thought-provoking article on the use of word choice when promoting a plant-based diet. Given two identical cookies, one labeled healthy and the other not, consumers declared the healthy one didn't taste as good! Apparently we need to downplay the health benefits while coming up with new adjectives for good food: https://insideclimatenews.org/news/22122016/meat-consumption-diet-plants...

I'm looking for new ideas for this new year, particularly lunch ideas. I have been stuck in a sandwich-carrot-fruit routine for quite some time and I'm ready for a change. What do you all do about lunch? I hope you will let us know!

Happy cooking,
Eve
